York begins the Christmas season this year (2009) with festive late shopping on Thursday 19th November and includes some organized family fun and festivities such as the decoration of a sparkling Christmas tree in St Helen’s Square and an ice sculpture of an angel in St Sampson’s Square. This gives visitors and locals alike a taste of what’s in store for the most popular event in York’s Christmas calendar, St Nicholas Fayre on the 26th November followed by The annual Festival of Angels which takes place on 12-13 December.
Combine all this with a colourful programme of events, the narrow cobbled medieval streets and gothic architecture of York, and the nightly ghost walks, and you have an exciting winter season for visitors to our beautiful city! St Nicholas Fayre on the 26th November is certainly a great time to visit when you can be taken back in time to experience carol singers, Victorian costume traders, and the delicious smells of roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate. St Nicholas Fayre starts on November 26th and lasts for four days with an array of lively events around the city!

A quote from Berick KalerYork Ambassador 2009 :
“York is a magical place to be at Christmas. We may not have the sun but we do have more fun than anywhere else in the country. I hope the York Theatre Royal Pantomime plays a big part in creating this great festive atmosphere for both residents and visitors alike.“
